What is NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming)?
Succinctly defining NLP is not an easy task. What's more, when asking anyone involved in NLP to define it they will generally focus on the aspects which are most useful or meaningful to them. Taking a therapeutic viewpoint, NLP provides a number of exquisite techniques which allow people to quickly and easily create they want to extremely quickly.
Neuro Linguistic Programming was created by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. They define NLP as follows:
"The strategies, tools and techniques of NLP represent an opportunity unlike any
other for the exploration of human functioning, or more precisely, that rare and
valuable subset of human functioning known as genius." John Grinder (co-
"NLP is an attitude which is an insatiable curiosity about human beings with a methodology
that leaves behind it a trail of techniques." Richard Bandler (co-
In what way does Enhance utilise NLP?
Enhance utilises NLP in two ways. Firstly, NLP techniques can be used in a conversational way to achieve your intended session outcome in a relaxed and informal manner. Secondly, NLP techniques can be combined with hypnosis to give additional potency to a hypnotherapy session. Top.
Does NLP achieve the same outcomes as hypnotherapy?
NLP techniques can be used in all the same areas as hypnotherapy. Typically NLP sessions are more interactive and versatile than hypnotherapy sessions. In the same way that hypnotic trance allows conscious filters to be bypassed allowing direct unconscious communication, particular Neuro Linguistic Programming techniques and language patterns are effective for the same reason. Top.
How will I know that the NLP session has worked?
NLP techniques will produce notable results during a session. Sometimes it can take a few weeks for the changes to 'bed in'. If a session appears not to have worked it might indicate that there are related issues which need addressing before any changes can become fully integrated. Top.
Not exactly, no. Although NLP techniques include methods which allow you to change aspects of yourself , this is achieved by drawing upon your own internal 'resources'. What this means is that the changes you experience are totally congruent to who you are and completely natural. Top.
Hypnotherapy is a technique of inducing a client into a hypnotic trance in order to communicate directly with their unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is offered information and suggestions which allow it to create the client's desired outcome. Communicating directly with the unconscious mind whilst in a trance state allows the therapeutic work to integrate without interference from the barriers and filters of the conscious mind. Top.
Hypnosis is a naturally ocurring state of trance. We all naturally go in and out of trance states many times a day, for example when daydreaming or when absorbed in thought. A hypnotist or hypnotherapist simply guides the client into this natural and relaxing trance state. Unlike the way hypnosis is often portrayed by the media and stage hypnotists, there is no great drama or mystique in the process. Top.
What does a hypnotic trance feel like?
Hypnotic trance is often experienced as a state of deep relaxation and peacefulness. In general, there are three levels of trance: a light trance may feel similar to sitting comfortably relaxed allowing your thoughts to drift and associate freely, a medium trance may feel similar to that moment of peaceful relaxation just before falling asleep when your focus seems to be mostly internal, a deep trance is akin to being asleep with little external awareness. Most hypnotherapy sessions utilise the light and medium trance states. Top.
Will I lose control whilst in a hypnotic trance?
No. You will not lose control and will be able to exit from trance whenever you choose. Top.
What if I can't be hypnotised?
Hypnosis is a totally natural state of trance. Therefore everyone can be hypnotised and experience hypnosis if they choose to. However, it is always a choice, nobody can be hypnotised against their will. Holding the belief that you cannot be hypnotised can lessen the chance that a hypnotic induction will be successful, therefore it is best to discard this belief if you wish to experience a hypnotherapy session. People who are practised at deep relaxation or meditation often find that they are able to enter into a hypnotic trance very quickly. Occasionally it can take a little time or practice to fully enjoy a hypnotic trance if the client is not familiar with deep relaxation. Top.
Can I be hypnotised against my will?
No. Contrary to the common media portrayal, it is impossible to be hypnotised against your will. Entering a hypnotic trance is always a voluntary act. Top.
Can I be made to do things against my will?
No. Research has proven that people will always exit the hypnotic state if they are asked to do anything which is incongruent to their personality. Your unconscious mind will always maintain your best interest. Top.
How will I know that the hypnotherapy session has worked?
Hypnotherapy works by altering the unconscious processes which define our feelings or behaviour. Sometimes the changes are immediately apparent and sometimes it can take a few weeks for the changes to 'bed in'. If a session appears not to have worked it might indicate that there are related issues which need addressing before any changes can become fully integrated. Top.
Will I remember what happened during the hypnotherapy session?
This depends on the nature of the hypnotherapy session and the wishes of the client. The conscious mind can have a tendency to analyse, rationalise and 'unpick' the unconscious suggestions given during the session. For this reason, where required, the hypnotherapist will suggest some amnesia to ensure that the conscious mind will not undo what has been done. Top.
I want to resolve an uncomfortable memory, but I don't want to discuss or re-
Enhance uses techniques which do not require the disclosure of personal or private information. Enhance endeavours to be respectful and sensitive at all times. Uncomfortable or traumatic memories can generally be resolved whilst remaining distant from them. Top.
