About hypnosis.
Hypnosis has a long and established history as a tool for therapeutic change and
performance coaching. Hypnotic trance allows open communication with our unconscious.
The unconscious mind is an immensely powerful part of ourselves. Researchers estimate
that right now your unconscious is taking care of at least 2.5 million things at
this very moment. Contrast this with your conscious mind which can deal with around
7 things at any one time.
Hypnotherapy is the art and science of utilising direct
conversation with the unconscious mind to bring about therapeutic change. Direct
conversation with the unconscious mind is most easily and powerfully achieved when
the client is in a trance state, hence the use of hypnosis to create this trance
state.
The words 'hypnosis' and 'trance' commonly conjure up images of people being 'controlled' by the hypnotist or of being totally 'inside' yourself and unaware of what is happening around you. This is the way that the media has typically portrayed hypnosis for the last 200 years, but the reality of hypnotic trance is very different to this.
Trance is a totally natural state that we all experience on average every 90 minutes throughout each day, meaning we naturally go in and out of trance several times in any day. Daydreaming, being lost in thought, temporary absence of mind, are all forms of naturally occurring trance. Perhaps you've noticed that during these times, your conscious mind seems to take a back seat, your thoughts seem to flow effortlessly and can appear to associate almost randomly? That free and easy flow of thought is an example of connecting directly with your unconscious mind.
Knowing that hypnotic trance is a totally safe, natural and relaxing state to be in, it might be worth now remembering that our unconscious minds are in control of over 2.5 million processes, including all of our inner workings and automatic responses. Hypnotherapy is highly effective as it allows direct communication with the unconscious mind, and therefore allows changes to be made to any part of us that we would normally consider to be ‘automatic or out of our control.
The unconscious mind will always act in the way that it considers to be in your best interest. Contrary to the common myth, it is impossible to use hypnosis to 'program' someone to do something against their will. Whilst experiencing a hypnotic trance, people will usually be fully aware of what is happening around them and will naturally come out of the trance state when needed. The client remains in absolute control throughout the hypnosis session.
